Know MoreLuangwa District is one of Zambia’s 114 Districts located in the eastern part of Lusaka Province, bordering Rufunsa District in the west and two countries Mozambique and Zimbabwe to the east and south respectively. The District administration is situated approximately 350 kilometres from Lusaka the capital city of Zambia.
Luangwa District has a population of 30,506 inhabitants and covers an area of 3,471 sq. km, which gives the District a density of 8.78 person pr. sq. km (Luangwa District Health Office, 2018). The population is concentrated along the two rivers and is primarily a rural population depending on subsistence agriculture, small scale fishing, mat making from reeds, and forest products.
Two of the largest rivers (Zambezi and Luangwa) in Zambia wind their way through Luangwa District and later on into Indian Ocean through Mozambique. However, this does not guarantee safe access to clean water for the neighbouring communities. Thirty-five percent of people have no access to safe drinking water. Boreholes are few, and many people walk long distances to collect water from shallow wells that are contaminated by animals, and often dry up during droughts. Collecting water from rivers places people at significant risk of crocodile attacks.
