Kavalamanja Gardens

Kavalamanja Gardens

Article I

In the heart of Luangwa District, where climate change and poverty once seemed insurmountable, the Kavalamanja community has found a beacon of hope. Thanks to the Luangwa Child Development Agency (LCDA) and ChildFund New Zealand's joint initiative, the village is now thriving with lush gardens, nourishing food, and a renewed sense of dignity.

For years, the people of Kavalamanja struggled to make ends meet. Unreliable rainfall, drought, and soil degradation had taken a devastating toll on their crops. The Luangwa River, once a lifeline, had dried up, and the community was forced to rely on limited resources. Elephants and other wildlife would often destroy what little they had, leaving families with nothing.

In 2014, with approximately 2.5 million kwacha, LCDA and ChildFund New Zealand stepped in, bringing with them a vision of a brighter future — the KATIKA Project. This initiative provided:

  • 355 hectares of fenced land, protecting crops from wildlife
  • Solar-powered water installation and storage tanks, ensuring a steady supply of water
  • Essential skills and knowledge on gardening and farming

The results have been nothing short of transformative. Mrs. Mabuza, a local beneficiary, shares her story: "The Katika project has been a game-changer for us. The fence has kept the elephants at bay, and the water has made all the difference. We've gone from struggling to survive to thriving."

  • Reduced crop destruction by wildlife
  • Increased food security and nutrition
  • Improved livelihoods and economic opportunities
  • Enhanced community cohesion and cooperation

As the community continues to grow and thrive, they are eager to take their next steps. With support for agriculture, medicine, and continued maintenance, Kavalamanja's gardens will continue to flourish. The people of Kavalamanja are proud of their progress and are committed to preserving their hard-won gains.

Sinyawagora Rural Health Centre

Transforming Healthcare in Luangwa — since its completion in 2022, replacing the old, dilapidated facility, Sinyawagora Rural Health Centre has brought improved healthcare services to the community, addressing critical needs and saving lives.

The old health centre's poor condition forced women to travel long distances to Katondwe Mission Hospital for deliveries, most would shun away from it as it posed significant risks to their health and lives. The lack of essential services, including a proper maternity ward, worsened the challenges faced by the community.

Through a partnership between the Luangwa Child Development Agency (LCDA) and ChildFund New Zealand, the Sinyawagora Rural Health Centre was constructed and equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. The centre now serves over 2,988 community members, including 600 under-five children, providing:

  • Improved access to quality healthcare services, including maternal and child health
  • Reduced risks associated with long-distance travel for deliveries
  • Enhanced community resilience to seasonal challenges, such as impassable roads during the rainy season

The facility has recorded 229 safe deliveries from 2022 to October 2025 and has brought immense relief to the community. Jennifer Mumba, a trained volunteer, shares, "The new facility has brought massive relief to our community, with medicines readily available and staff always on standby... The maternity ward has made a significant difference in our lives."

The Sinyawagora Rural Health Centre demonstrates the power of collaboration and commitment to improving healthcare in Luangwa District. The partnership between LCDA and ChildFund New Zealand has:

  • Improved healthcare outcomes for the community
  • Enhanced access to essential services
  • Shown the impact of collaboration in addressing critical healthcare needs

As LCDA and ChildFund New Zealand continue to work together, we remain dedicated to improving the lives of community members in Luangwa District and beyond.

Kapoche Special School

Kapoche Special School

Article III

Kapoche Special School has been a sanctuary for children with diverse abilities since its construction in 2013 by the Luangwa Child Development Agency (LCDA) with support from ChildFund New Zealand. The school was handed over to the government in 2014 and has since experienced remarkable growth, increasing its enrollment from 47 to 87 pupils.

Catering to students from early childhood education to grade 12, the school provides a nurturing environment for children with physical disabilities, hearing and visual impairments, learning disabilities, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD).

For over 12 years, LCDA, with generous support from ChildFund New Zealand, has played a vital role in ensuring special children access quality education. The organization's commitment to providing school fees and essential learning materials has been instrumental in empowering pupils.

Dianess Zulu, a grade 12 pupil with hearing impairment, shares: "Kapoche Special School has been my home since grade 5. I've learned to read and understand better, and I'm grateful for the hope it has given me for a brighter future."

Juliet Mulenga, a pupil with a visual challenge, adds: "I'm thankful for the knowledge I've gained on environmental protection and agriculture. The magnifying glass has been a lifesaver, enabling me to read and learn with ease."

Madam Elizabeth, the headteacher, expresses her deepest gratitude: "LCDA's contribution has been invaluable, supplementing the school's grant and enabling us to provide our pupils with the resources they need to thrive."

Looking to the future, the headteacher hopes to establish a skills center where pupils can acquire practical skills in carpentry, tailoring, plumbing, and construction—empowering them to become self-sufficient and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

The partnership between LCDA and ChildFund New Zealand has transformed lives. As we celebrate this success story, we look forward to continuing our support and empowering these young individuals to reach their full potential.
