Newly constructed modern Maternity Annex at Kavalamanja Rural Health Centre

LCDA constructed a modern maternity wing at Kavalamanja Rural Health Centre serving the remotest hard to reach community in Luangwa District. The maternity wing was handed over to the government through the Permanent Secretary of Health-Technical Services, Dr. Kennedy Malama in February 2019. The maternity annex has modern equipment providing quality delivery services.

1X3 classroom block at Chimutengo Primary School

LCDA constructed a 1X3 classroom block at Chimutengo Primary School. Initially, the school only had an ECE centre which meant that it could not cater for primary school going children who had to walk about 8km to the nearest two (2) primary schools. The classroom block is now benefiting about 106 children (45 boys, 61girls). This development has contributed to reducing the risk of children being attacked by elephants as they go to school since the school is now near their homes. Additionally this has also improved Teacher-Pupil Ratio in the nearby schools which were congested

Provided 3 schools with Desktop computers

LCDA provided 30 computers to 3 primary schools Janeiro, Katondwe and Mwavi). Each of the three schools received 10 computers making it easy for school children to learn and improve their Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills as they are able to practice

The teacher for ICT Mr. Chomba said that “Teaching is now easier because computers act as teaching aids and makes it easier for children to understand. The subject has become easy for pupils because they no longer visualize what they learn but they are able to see and work on computers”.He further added that administrative work has become easier due to the data base created to store the school information.

Youth boats transporting traders to and from Mozambique

LCDA empowered four youth groups (comprising 10 members each) with four engine boats as an income generating activity. The boats are used as water transport for transporting people and goods across Zambezi and Luangwa Rivers into the neighbouring Zimbabwe and Mozambique respectively. The youth were capacity built in entrepreneurship and registered as cooperatives before they received the boats. The support has created employment for the youth. The proceeds from the boats have contributed to improving the livelihood of the benefiting youth and their families, for example, the youth are able to support their families in terms of education including themselves in addition to supporting three (3) other orphans and vulnerable children from their community. Further, two groups (Tiyanjane and Chitukuko) have diversified their business by procuring 4 cows (Tiyanjane bought 3 while Chitukuko bought 1 cow) and the third group (New Innovation Multi-purpose) has procured a new engine for a boat in order to expand their business and increase the number of beneficiaries.

A farmer harvesting honey in Chitope

LCDA supported 43 families with a total of 235 bee-hives (31 beneficiaries received 6 beehives each while 12 beneficiaries received 4 beehives each) in Tigwilizane Community. This development has contributed to improved income among the beneficiaries as they are able to support their children at school and meet their families’ basic needs. Some families procured some goats using the money they raised out of the sale of honey.

One of the beneficiaries Chisha, indicated that “From one hive’s harvest of about 20kgs,he was able to raise ZMW300.00and he harvests twice in a year. With six hives, he is able to make about ZMW1,800.00 every six months of harvest”. Chisha also added that his plan is to acquire cows from the proceeds of his honey business.

Constructed Teachers Houses

Two houses were constructed at Kaunga secondary School while two more are under construction at Chimutengo Primary School. Kaunga secondary school was recently constructed and had only one staff house which is used as an office. Therefore, the construction of the two staff houses has contributed to providing decent accommodation for teachers at the school who were staying in the surrounding villages. The two teachers are also motivated and this has made them to report early for classes as they reside within the school premises, therefore spending more time with pupils which in turn contribute to quality teaching.
